Amy Burrow nee Hancock

Amy Hancock was born in Milverton, Somerset in 1792, daughter of Aaron Hancock and Sarah. The family appeared to have been Weavers, but I have not been able to find any mention of Aaron and Sarah's marriage to confirm this occupation. They were definitely NOT married in Milverton. They had 4 (possibly 5) children, three of whom seem to have survived to adulthood - Miriam, Amy and James.

Amy married a drifter named John Burrow in Milverton in July 1817. Their first son William was born 5 months later. John was listed as a sojourner. His home parish and occupation were not named. In 1824 the entire family were removed to Ottery St Mary in Devon. They visited Milverton at least (in 1828) where two of the younger children were baptised, and then stayed in OSM where the youngest child, Frances, was baptised in 1832.

Because John Burrow died in 1839, he was not named on the 1841 census. And it took a long time to find the children because of bad transcriptions. However in September 2005 I did finally find them. Their mother Amy had remarried. James Lathrope was a widower and a fishmonger.

Emma, Abraham, Sarah & Frances BURRUGH lived in Jesu Street.
Parents James & Emma Lathrope - Amy did get married again - in 1840.
Amy's age listed as 45 - she was actually 49.
Frances (AKA Fanny) was actually only 9 years old - not 10.
Sarah was down as a boy not a girl.
ALD - this has to be Abraham - the age of 17 fits.

And 3 of the children plus their mother, were correctly identified as being born out of county - They were born in Milverton, Somerset. This also means that after the first removal in 1824, the family had to have returned to Milverton in Somerset for the next 2 children (Sarah and James) to be born there.

I believe that the spelling of the family name on the 1841 census is quite significant. Nothwithstanding that it was mispelled by the enumerator, it should have been BURROUGH. I believe that this was John's original official family spelling. It is my belief that BURROW was the phonetic spelling - this is what is written when one is hearing the name as opposed to reading it. It eventually became the official spelling.

As for the older children, in the 1841 census, William was married to Sarah and living in Clist Honiton, Isaac was working on a farm in Talaton. Thomas was working on a farm in Tipton, and young James was not with the other children. He seems to have died. There is a possible death record for him, but I have not yet purchased the certificate to confirm the details.

I can't find any Amy or Emma Lathrope but there is an Amelia Lathrope. This name is probably correct since James was listed as a widow living with his son Samuel in the 1851 census and Amy was not listed in the 1851 census at all. If this was Amy - she died at the young age of 51. Her second Husband James Lathrope died in 1857.
